Now that the 2016 NFL Draft is over, Bovada has released a fresh new set of 2017 Super Bowl odds. The last time we checked in on the Eagles' Super Bowl odds was right after NFL free agency took place. The Birds had dropped from 33/1 right after the 2016 Super Bowl to 50/1. This time there was no change; the Eagles are still at at 50/1.
The Eagles are tied with four other teams at 50/1. Those teams include the Atlanta Falcons, the Buffalo Bills, the Chicago Bears, and the Los Angeles Rams. Then there are a total of 18 other NFL teams with better odds than Philadelphia. Here's how the NFC East shapes up.
Dallas Cowboys - 22/1 (tied for ninth)
New York Giants - 25/1 (tied for 12th)
Washington Redskins - 40/1 (tied for 17th)
Philadelphia Eagles - 50/1 (tied for 19th)
I think it's hard to feel super confident about the Eagles in the short-term. Yes, there are reasons to be encouraged about the defense under Jim Schwartz. But there a lot of question marks on offense, starting with the quarterback position. Who is the starter? The Eagles insist they want Sam Bradford to return but the underachieving veteran is demanding a trade and skipping voluntary workouts. If Bradford doesn't come back, the Birds are left with Chase Daniel and Carson Wentz at quarterback. It's not like the quarterback, whoever it is, has a ton of offensive weapons to work with. Not to mention Doug Pederson is a total unknown as a head coach.
Then again, I don't think the rest of the NFC East is so good that the Eagles can't compete for the crown. Though I certainly wouldn't favor them, the Birds are in the mix to some extent.
Revisiting my record prediction from last month, I think the Eagles top out at 8-8. That's with me being a little optimistic, too.
