DeForest Buckner, DE, Oregon
From the Case Files of Detective Rohan "Bullet" Sharma or Buck Wild in Oregon.
4/3/16
Philadelphia
It started at a urinal in a TGI Fridays. Things have changed since the last time you've heard from me. In the past year I've quit my job as locator at Belligerent Guerilla Network (BGN) things had gotten too crazy since the Vicky Beasley case. The drugs, the money, the drugs, the women, and the drugs. Not to mention all the BGN mainstays had left. Danta Claws is missing, I think he's a cheesemonger/pizza aficionado in South Philly. Mikey K ran away with some broad to Jacksonville Florida. Poor guy he's always in my prayers, if you know I actually did pray. And yours truly? Well I did a spell in LA, fixing things for the stars. I told Liev Schreiber my story and now he's making big moolah on Showtime playing my life. Screw you Liev.
I came back to Philly looking to make some scratch and I ended up at the classiest joint I knew, TGI Fridays. It was $5 dollar beer night. I must've ended up having one too many because I had to make the brown New England Lighthouse sing. All of the sudden while I'm doing my business, a big guy walks in and occupies the stall right next to me. I remember saying, Hey Buddy, Use a different a stall all of them are open. I then realized it was the Notorious BLG.
"You Sonofabitch, what are you doing here?" I asked.
"We need you back Bullet, We need you to take a case" He responded.
"Usually when men proposition me in a restroom they want something else" I fired back
He told me he had a job for me that was given to him from someone in my home city, Baltimore. A guy up there named the "Raven" (someone read too much Poe) needed someone for his personal defense. Like my last case in Chicago, "The Raven" lost a lot of his defenders due to age. I told him I'll do this case as a favor to BLG. I thought about who I would send for my man down in Baltimore. There are plenty of good defenders I could think of. Soul Bosa Nova from Ohio was on my mind. "100 Miles" Myles from Cali was there too. But I knew, I needed to go somewhere where most Philly fans dare not go. Hopefully birds of a feather will flock together. I'm heading to Oregon.
4/4/16
Eugene, Oregon.
I would be lying to you if I said I wasn't nervous. Philly and Oregon got bad blood since the whole "incident." I decided to calm myself down by looking at DeForest "Buckwild" Buckner's file. I first, as always, checked out his Spider-Graph
Buckner seems to have good arm length and is a beast physically. But I need to see more from Buckner, I put on some tape.
Damn DeForest. This guy has power for days. He absolutely blew past that OL like a kid blowing on a dandelion.
He is able to use his power to bend around OL and get in the backfield. As a sources says from CBSsport, "Quickly stacks and sheds, using pop in his hands to work off contact. Fluid lower body and athletic footwork to move laterally and break down in tight spaces. Plays low for a man his size with good bend, making it tough for blockers to attack his chest."
NFL.Com has another glowing review "Long arms and good play speed allow him maximum field coverage to tackle. Flexible upper body. Can flip shoulders, then hips around the edge of blockers allowing him to play on the other side of the line. Has size and athleticism for scheme versatility. Quick off the snap and difficult to cut off in run game."
He actually generated 163 tackles during his last two years at Oregon which is rare for a Dline man to have that many tackles. Based on the tape it's easy to see why. Buckner uses a variety of moves to get pass OL. He actually has the most tackles for a DL player this year at 83 combined tackles. His sack numbers aren't too shabby either as he had 11 sacks this year. He is almost like a damn contortionist based on how low or high he gets
Holy Hell he just leapfrogged one MFer to tackle another. This shows the kind of athleticism Buckner has.
There are some downsides Buckner has as well. He does lack elite speed so there are times where he would beat his man, and just miss the OP. In that way he would be way more effective in the 3-4 defense than being a defensive end in a 4-3. He had a very up and down battle against the fearsome Spartan gang. Conklin abused him.
He does also need to refine his technique as Stephen White former defender from SBnation says, "He was clearly productive as a run defender and a pass rusher, but he could have put up even better numbers in several of those games had he just escaped off a few more blocks when he already had the blocker beat."
Stephen White also says, "He might not be the safest choice because there are definitely some things he has to work on to be great, but I would say Buckner certainly has the most upside of any defensive lineman I've broken down so far this offseason. And that's saying something."
Convinced, I close my notes as I land in Oregon. Before I head to Eugene, I head to the store to pick up the Johnny Walker twins as well as a pack of smokey treats. I leave one of the Walker twins with the security guard and head to the gym. I find Buckner and explain the situation. He is wary at first but loves crab cakes and the Wire so is he's in. Just before we are about to leave. A chill hits me. Standing in the doorway is my worst fear, Chip Kelly. He doesn't want Buckner to go to Baltimore, he wants Buck to join him in SF. I tell him to shove a certain male appendage up his poop chute. We had short intense shootout. Kinda like your first time during prom night. I'll spare you the details, but I had to plug both his kneecaps. I tell Chip that he was supposed to be the chosen one, he was supposed to bring Philly championships not leave it worse than it was. Chip screams that he hates me. I drop Buckner at the airport and watched him fly to Baltimore. I get into my rented 2013 Mazda 6 and tweet to BLG the job is done #OregonAdventure. I hit the open road once again looking for a new start
The End?
Author's note: Stephen White truly gives some of the best analysis during draft time. I really recommend reading his profile on Buckner or any other player you like.
