[BREAKING: Browns trade No. 2 pick to Eagles]
Terms of a potential trade between the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns were revealed on Tuesday evening by Alex Marvez of FOX Sports. The deal reportedly involves the Eagles moving up to the No. 2 overall pick in exchange for Philadelphia's first and third round picks from both the 2016 and 2017 NFL Draft. That would be a steep price to pay, and not everyone is believing that those are the exact terms. NFL insider Adam Schefter had the following to say in an appearance on the 97.5 The Fanatic Morning Show on Wednesday morning.
"I don’t think the price is as being reported," Schefter said. "I’ll say that. I know it’s been out there. I think it’s been reported two one’s, two three’s … I know that’s not right. It may be very close to it, but I know that’s not exactly the terms of the trade. "I don’t know specifically what it is. It’s going to be a bounty. Maybe it’s two one’s and a three. Maybe it’s something close to that."
"Whatever it is, right now, it doesn’t matter because there’s no deal. There are issues between the teams that would have to get resolved before they could get a deal done anyway. So I think all of us are just speculating exactly what that compensation would be."
For what it's worth, former Eagles and Browns executive Joe Banner isn't buying the leaked terms of the Eagles-Browns deal either.
If I were an eagles fan I wouldn't believe rumors about cost to move up.— Joe Banner (@JoeBanner13) April 20, 2016
While Schefter thinks the terms of the trade might not be accurate, he is not denying Philadelphia's interest in getting a deal done. In fact, he said he thinks it if it were up to the Eagles they'd already be at the No. 2 spot.
"I think if it were up to the Eagles today, the deal would be done," he said. "But the Browns are taking their time. They’re being methodical. And I understand why they’re doing that because they probably believe that if the Eagles are wherever they are today, whatever the offer is, it’s not going anywhere."
It's been reported that the Browns are shopping their No. 2 pick in an attempt to trade down pick up more assets in the process. It's not hard to believe Cleveland could have leaked this Eagles-Browns trade rumor in an attempt to create an aggressive market for their pick. There's no need for the Browns to rush a deal. They have the luxury of sitting back and waiting for the best offer.
"You’ve got eight days to wait and then 15 minutes to wait," Schefter said. "My understanding is that the Browns really like Jared Goff. So who’s to say that the Rams don’t pull a flip-flop and go Carson Wentz at the last moment? And if they do, and Goff is sitting there, then aren’t [the Browns] going to be sorry they traded that pick? So I think there’s some thought that it’s possible, possible, unless Philly or some other team makes some kind of offer that the Browns simply cannot turn down, that the Browns just wait. Because they can make that [trade] then if they want."
There's ample evidence that the Eagles have significant interest in trading up and plucking one of the top two quarterbacks from this draft class. The Eagles reportedly finished as the runner-up in the Titans-Rams trade. They reportedly had talks with the Chargers about moving up to No. 3. And now the Birds might be in negotiations with the Browns. Draft night is sure shaping up to be eventful.
