NFL free agency hasn't officially begun yet but the Philadelphia Eagles may have already struck out on one of their targets. According to NFL insider Jason La Canfora, the Birds had "significant interest" in impending Steelers free agent wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey before Pittsburgh re-signed him to a three-year contract worth $3.8 million.
The term "significant interest" here is a little odd because it's not like Heyward-Bey is an impact contributor. The 29-year-old pass catcher has been a role player in Pittsburgh's offense. He played 37.3% of the team's offensive snaps last season and also contributed frequently on special teams. The former No. 7 overall pick had 21 receptions last season for 314 yards and two touchdowns.
The Eagles' interest in Heyward-Bey is ultimately irrelevant now but it does signify the team is interested in adding a veteran pass catcher. This year's free agent wide receiver class isn't so great so the Eagles would probably be better off adding a bargain guy than trying to overpay for mediocre talent.
