Ron Brooks can make the Eagles' special teams unit even better

Get to know this new Eagles player.

One of the Eagles' lesser heralded acquisitions in NFL free agency was the signing of former Bills cornerback Ron Brooks. Brooks very well may not be a starter in Philadelphia but he can still be a value contributor. Brooks led the Bills in special teams tackles in 2014 and finished third in 2015. He can also serve as depth in the secondary. In order to get more familiar with the Eagles' new cornerback, here's some insight from Brian Galliford (@BrianGalliford) of Buffalo Rumblings.

1) Were Bills fans upset to see the team not keep him?

"No. There was some initial hope for him as a draft pick, but Brooks struggled with injury in his four years in Buffalo, and never made an impact beyond the realm of special teams."

2) What are his strengths?

"He's a very good athlete, and made his mark in Buffalo covering kicks and punts, where he can really excel when healthy. He'll also have system familiarity with Schwartz, of course."

3) What are his weaknesses?

"Inexperience: he played just 404 snaps on defense for the Bills in his entire four-year career here. When he did play, he was a noticeable liability in coverage. There may be limited upside, given that he'll already be 28 in October, so any team signing him probably isn't doing so for his contributions to a defense, other than as depth."

4) The assumption here is that Brooks will mostly be a special teams guy. Do you think he can push for playing time on defense? Outside or in the slot?

"I do not expect that from him. He really only earned the shot at serious playing time once in Buffalo, heading into the 2013 season (his second) as the favorite to win the slot corner job, but he was fairly easily beaten out by undrafted rookie Nickell Robey for that gig. Otherwise, he was an afterthought and special teams player until injuries started to pile up."

5) Brooks seems like a bit of a goofy guy, and I mean that in a good way. Anything to say about his personality?

"I have no impression of him personally other than what shows up on his Twitter feed, which offers a lot of standard athlete fare, but does also have some interesting twists from time to time. He never really had the opportunity to make an impression through the media here due to his role."
