The Super Bowl is over which means the offseason has officially begun for all 32 NFL teams. It also means there are only 80 days until the 2016 NFL Draft is set to take place on April 28. We're going to kill some time with our regular Mock Draft Monday series from now until then.
Last week, SB Nation's Dan Kadar had the Eagles taking a cornerback in the first round. Most people were not so excited about the pick. This week's edition has the Eagles going with a quarterback at No. 13.
13. Philadelphia Eagles: Paxton Lynch, QB, Memphis - The Eagles really haven't had a good solution at starting quarterback since Donovan McNabb. Philadelphia took McNabb in Andy Reid's first year in Philadelphia in 1999. New Philadelphia head coach Doug Pederson, a Reid understudy, could follow the same blueprint by taking a quarterback in his first year. Lynch and Carson Wentz of North Dakota State can be debated, but Lynch has a much longer resume to rely upon.
Lynch is the second quarterback off the board in this mock. Jared Goff goes to the Cleveland Browns at No. 2. Kadar has the Eagles passing over Carson Wentz, who is slotted to the Los Angeles Rams at No. 15.
The Eagles could certainly be interested in drafting a rookie quarterback. Recent Eagles quarterback rumors indicate the team isn't interested in putting the franchise tag on Sam Bradford and instead have interest in bringing Nick Foles back, presumably as a bridge quarterback to pair with a rookie. Local reporters have since denied that ESPN report, however.
In any case, Lynch is an interesting prospect. Read BGN's scouting report on him:
NFL Comparison: Lynch reminds me a lot of Jaguars quarterback, Blake Bortles. Each have outstanding size and poise in the pocket with the athletic ability to extend plays. Like Bortles, Lynch is at his best when he is attacking down the field, though he does not get to do it nearly enough in the current offense he is in. Similarly, they both had a lot of mechanical issues coming out of college that included their feet and their releases. However, I do think Lynch is a smarter quarterback than Bortles, but does not have quite the consistent game breaking passing mentality as Bortles... Though that could be a product of the offenses they play in.
