The San Francisco 49ers are expected to hire a new head coach within the next 24 hours, according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter. The two candidates: Chip Kelly and Mike Shanahan.
This news involves the Philadelphia Eagles in a number of ways. First, it's interesting to see Kelly is actually a finalist for the San Francisco job. They've reportedly been the only NFL team to interview him so far. On Wednesday, Schefter said he doesn't think Kelly will land with the 49ers or any head coaching job. So maybe Shanahan is really going to be the guy San Francisco. As Eagles fans will remember, he last coached for the Washington Redskins.
Another way this news impacts the Eagles is because it seems to indicate the 49ers are out on Tom Coughlin. San Francisco interviewed the former New York Giants head coach earlier this week. Now there are reports the Eagles have turned their attention to Coughlin. Philadelphia is meeting with the 69-year-old coach for a second interview on Thursday.
Teams around the league are preparing to finalize their coaching decisions. Will the Eagles be next?
UPDATE: Coughlin turns down the Eagles.
