The Philadelphia Eagles 2015 preseason schedule continues ends tonight as the Birds take on the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. This is the last game the Eagles will play before their season opener on Monday Night Football against the Atlanta Falcons. Time to start getting excited.
But before you get too excited, the Eagles still have some business to take care of first. After tonight's game, the team will have to make cuts down from 75 players to the final 53-man active roster limit. The Eagles will have some tough decisions to make, which is a good thing because it signifies they have a deep roster.
Players playing in tonight's Eagles vs. Jets game are mostly players who are fighting for their roster spots. Don't expect to see many starters out there. The exceptions for the Eagles possibly include starting inside linebacker Kiko Alonso, who said he expects to play this week. Alonso hasn't played in a real game since 2013 so there is some merit to him shaking off the rust. Second-year wide receiver Josh Huff also said he's going to play after sitting out last week's game due to the death of his god brother. Even if Alonso and Huff play, one would expect their snaps will be limited.
Tonight's game could be a key factor in deciding some roster battles. The biggest one to watch is obviously the competition for the third string quarterback spot. Are the Eagles going to keep Matt Barkley, Tim Tebow, or neither? Barkley will start the game, but Tebow still seems to be the favorite to win the job. Neither player has looked all that great this summer. Thus, the Eagles preseason success might not continue tonight. But who really cares?
