Eagles Training Camp Notes: 30 observations from Philadelphia's practice with the Ravens

Here's what we learned from today's Eagles joint practice with the Ravens.

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles continued training camp practice on Wednesday. The Eagles held the first of their three joint training camp practices with the Baltimore Ravens. There's a lot to talk about, so let's do this thing.

• Pads were on for today's session, of course.

• Quick injury update: DeMeco Ryans returned to practice, as expected. Zach Ertz (groin) and Earl Wolff (knee) were the only Eagles players not practicing.

• I spotted a Sam Bradford Eagles jersey prior to practice. Then another one later on. Those have been rare at Eagles practice. Tim Tebow and DeMarco Murray are usually the most popular ones. Someone was wearing a Nnamdi Asomugha jersey ... yikes.

• Eagles vice president of player personnel Ed Marynowitz and Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome were sitting together watching practice. They were only a few feet behind me. I didn't hear them say anything too interesting.

• Ravens linebackers were having a tough time covering Eagles tight ends and running backs one-on-one. Trey Burton burned Terrell Suggs for a touchdown on a Tim Tebow pass. Ball so hard. Eric Tomlinson made a good catch up the seam for a score after beating Elvis Dumervil. Burton beat another Ravens linebacker with an amazing one handed catch. The second-year tight end was able to reach for it without having to leave his feet. The Ravens linebacker even gave him a high five after the play as a sign of respect.

• Also: check out this play of Kenjon Barner destroying a Raven linebacker's ankles.

• The Eagles opened with Jordan Matthews, Riley Cooper, and Josh Huff as the first team wide receivers. Later, Huff was replaced by Nelson Agholor.

• Yet another day where Andrew Gardner lined up as first team right guard. He continues to look like the favorite.

• Sam Bradford hit Jordan Matthews with a nice anticipation throw over the middle on the first play of team versus team. Then Bradford threw a pass intended for Darren Sproles in the flat. A rare misfire by the quarterback.

• Undrafted free agent wide receiver Rasheed Bailey pancaked a Ravens cornerback with a great block. He has to be drawing some practice squad consideration.

• Speaking of practice squad, Denzel Rice did a great job on the punt coverage unit as a gunner. He easily fought off the double team from two Ravens blockers.

Jordan Hicks broke up a few passes.

• Bradford has looked especially sharp in red zone practice drills. He fired a strike to Riley Cooper before hitting Brent Celek for two touchdowns on back to back plays. His quick release and laser accuracy really come in handy here. Pairing Bradford with a strong red zone running back like DeMarco Murray should really increase Philadelphia's efficiency in scoring position this year.

Malcolm Jenkins tipped a Joe Flacco pass intended for a wide receiver in the back of the end zone. The Eagles' first team defense generally seemed to do a good job against Baltimore's first team offense in the red zone.

• Tebow threw a pass that landed out of bounds in the bushes. You never really have to worry about him failing to throw a ball out of bounds far enough.

Eric Rowe got out-muscled for position in the red zone to allow a Ravens touchdown. Good play by the wide receiver (Kamar Aiken).

Ryan Mathews busted through the Ravens' run defense a few time for big gains.

• DeMarco Murray was in full action and looked good as well.

• 94 WIP host Josh Innes and 97.5 The Fanatic host Mike Missanelli were at practice today. For those who aren't aware, they don't exactly like each other. There was a slight confrontation during practice. It didn't come to blows but the Eagles' PR staff had to kind of separate them at one point. More details on the drama here.

• The Eagles "pass rush" did a nice job of getting "pressure" on Flacco. I put those words in quotes since they aren't really allowed to touch the quarterback. Still, they forced him to throw the ball away a couple times.

• Jordan Matthews was on the receiving end of a late shove from former Giants safety Will Hill. Matthews got up and walked away but looked back and said something as he did. Jerk move by Hill.

Cody Parkey concerns continue: he missed three kicks during practice. One was a PAT (33 yards). Another one from 42 yards out bounced off the right upright. A third one missed from 47. Yikes.

• Bradford was almost picked off by (former Eagles) cornerback Kyle Arrington. The cornerback jumped high at the line of scrimmage to bat the pass down and almost came up with it. Just a good play by the DB. Bradford would get the last laugh, however. The quarterback connected on a pass to Matthews for a first down with Arrington trailing in coverage on the very next play.

• It was really weird seeing the Eagles practice so slowly. And with no music. John Harbaugh and the Ravens took away two key parts of Chip Kelly's practices.

• Walter Thurmond picked off a Ravens quarterback during 11-on-11. It's hard to tell for sure who it was since the Ravens' passers wear all black practice jerseys, but I think it was Flacco. Thurmond looks great in coverage.

• Flacco (again, I'm guessing here) was also picked off by Brandon Graham on a pass that was tipped.

Steve Smith beat Rowe in the end zone for a touchdown, or at least so he thought. Flacco's pass hit Smith in the hands but Rowe knocked it down before it could be counted as a completion. Great play by the rookie. A few plays later, Rowe broke up another pass. Encouraging. Later on in practice, Rowe was called for defensive holding. The ups and downs of being a rookie.

• A little skirmish broke out between the Eagles' third string offense and the Ravens' third string defense. No real fighting took place, just a big huddle. Tebow helped break it up, because of course he did.

Matt Barkley threw a pick six during team drills. Just not a good practice for him.
