Eagles football is finally back. It's been such a long time since the Birds last played at Lincoln Financial Field. So much has changed since then, too.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, a number of the team's new players likely won't be making their debuts on Sunday afternoon. Sam Bradford has already been ruled out. DeMarco Murray has been limited in practice and might be kept out. Kiko Alonso is recovering from a concussion. Returning players such as Zach Ertz (who will miss the entire preseason), Mychal Kendricks, and DeMeco Ryans are dealing with some injury issues as well.
Even if those players were healthy, they wouldn't be playing for all that long. According to Chip Kelly, Philadelphia's starters in this game will only play about eight to 10 snaps. That figures to be a series or two. Mark Sanchez will get the start at quarterback before Matt Barkley and Tim Tebow come in to finish out the game. The Eagles will get to evaluate their backup players in a game like this.
The Colts will play their backups an extended time as well. But before they get to that, former Eagles such as Trent Cole and Todd Herremans will be on display for a brief stint. It'll be weird to see the old veterans wearing new colors.
The timing of this game couldn't be any more odd. These two teams are going to play under the hot summer sun in 94 degree weather starting at 1 PM EST. I can't imagine Chip Kelly's side will have issues with hydration.
This should be a pretty ugly game, which is to be expected since it's preseason football. The key thing for the Eagles is to make it out of this healthy while evaluating their roster depth.
