Eagles' most overrated player is ... Byron Maxwell?

Who first comes to mind?

Fletcher Cox is arguably one of the most underrated players on the Philadelphia Eagles' roster, as we discussed yesterday. So who is the most overrated player on the Eagles' roster?

If you ask Pete Prisco of CBS Sports, the answer is none other than one of Philadelphia's major free agent signings this offseason: cornerback Byron Maxwell.

"I think he's a good No. 2 corner, who is getting paid like a shutdown corner. That's great risk. Too many general managers I've talked to this spring were shocked at what the Eagles paid him as a free agent. He's above average, but not great."

Prisco isn't the first to suggest the Eagles overpaid for Maxwell. ESPN named his contract the second worst value signing this offseason:

"Maxwell signed a deal with $25 million fully guaranteed at signing even though he has played more than 13 games in a regular season just once since entering the league as a sixth-round pick in 2011. Teammate Richard Sherman has a higher annual average, but his deal carried $12.4 million fully guaranteed (Sherman had time remaining on his deal, whereas Maxwell benefited from a wild cornerback market). How will Maxwell fare in a defense without the cast of playmakers he lined up with in Seattle?"

Maxwell was also recently highlighted on an NFL.com list of six players who are most likely to disappoint in 2015.

"Maxwell was outstanding in Seattle, but he won't have the luxury of playing with Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor in Philly. Being paid like a bona fide No. 1 corner, Maxwell is under pressure to prove that he can thrive away from the Legion of Boom. I love his size and technique -- and he's an upgrade over Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher -- but it's fair to wonder how he'll handle Odell Beckham, DeSean Jackson and Dez Bryant in the NFC East."

Maxwell is currently the fifth highest paid cornerback in the NFL, only behind Darrelle Revis, Patrick Peterson, Richard Sherman, and Joe Haden. No one is arguing Maxwell is a flat out bad player, but many don't see him as an elite one.

Still, if the Eagles were ever going to overpay, at least it made sense in this situation. Philadelphia desperately needed help at both outside corner positions. Maxwell fits the mold of tall and long defensive backs that the Eagles like. He may not be a star, but he should be a good starter.

If you don't agree with the Maxwell pick, who else would you say is the Eagles' most overrated player?
