Eagles, John Moffitt agree on one-year contract, per report

Well this is interesting.

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

According to a report from Ross Jones of FOXSports.com, the Philadelphia Eagles have signed free agent offensive guard John Moffitt. It's said to be a one-year deal.

This is an interesting move because Moffitt just recently returned to the NFL after retiring in November 2013.

The 28-year-old Moffitt was originally drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft. The Wisconsin alum started nine games as a rookie before starting another six in 2012. He was then traded to the Cleveland Browns during the 2013 offseason but a failed physical voided the trade. Instead of landing with the Browns, the Seahawks traded Moffitt to the Denver Broncos in exchange for defensive tackle Sealver Siliga. Moffitt was active for two games with the Broncos but never played an offensive snap before retiring.

Moffitt has dealt with some issues throughout his career. In 2011, he was suspended for games due to violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances. In March 2014, Moffitt was arrested and charged for drug possession and battery.

It would seem like Chip Kelly believes Moffitt has turned his life around. NFL Insider Jay Glazer had some positive things to say about Moffitt when he un-retired earlier in June:

"I have never been so proud of a guy I've trained than I am of John Moffitt. Retired two years ago bc he knew he had drug issues, took time to go to rehab, clean up his life, beat his demons and he has taken his life back! Guy inspires us every day. He came to me 3 months ago @unbreakable to train to take his career back. He's become the favorite of every player in our gym. He officially un-retired today. Free agent starting guard. So proud of him to get here"

The Eagles have an obvious need at guard after releasing 2014 starters Todd Herremans and Evan Mathis this offseason. Veteran journeyman Allen Barbre is favored to start at left guard but there is an open competition for the right guard spot. It would appear Moffitt might be in the mix along with Matt Tobin, Andrew Gardner, Kevin Graf, and Dennis Kelly.

For what it's worth, Pro Football Focus graded Moffitt 59th out of 81 guards in 2012. He was 76th out of 78 in 2011.

Here's a Moffitt spider graph:

Note that the Moffitt signing is not official yet. The Eagles' roster is currently full at 90 players, so the team will have to release someone to make an available spot if/when Moffitt officially signs.
