Eagles News: Chip Kelly is borrowing from Bill Belichick

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 6/25/2015.

Let's get to the links...

NFL rookie snap counts: Eagles rookies used sparingly in 2014 - PhillyVoice
When the Eagles drafted Smith, he was a player who was thought to be a high upside guy who might take some time to develop. However, with those types of "projects," you at least want to see something encouraging, but Smith never flashed potential the same way a guy like Josh Huff did as a rookie. Obviously, Smith's lack of playing time is a major reason why the Eagles had one of the lowest overall rookie snap counts in the NFL. Smith will almost certainly be on the 53-man roster once training camp shakes out, but he will also almost certainly not start Week 1 in 2015, barring an injury to Connor Barwin or Brandon Graham. Even in the event Barwin or Graham go down, it's no guarantee that Smith would be the first man up, although he got some first-team reps during OTAs and minicamp.

Chip Kelly using Belichick playbook on personnel - Daily News
MALCOLM JENKINS said something last week that offered an interesting prism through which to view the Eagles' frenetic offseason. "Look at New England," the safety said. "It's always about the team first. They obviously have one of the best quarterbacks on their team, but when you look at their roster, they move people in and out, plug people in and out, because they have a way that they do things. The Patriot Way. That's how they win. I think that's what Chip is trying to do here."

Chip Talk - Iggles Blitz
Chip is interesting because he takes ideas from all over the place and uses them to shape his coaching methods and football strategies. Football generally shuns outside ideas. Chip embraces them. Younger coaches are doing this more and more so Chip might not seem that unique in a decade.

Eagles 53-Man Roster Projection - Birds 24/7
The first six guys here are locks. I think either Tobin or Gardner will be starting at right guard, and the other one will be the top backup. Kelly probably has an edge on some of the other backups, and Molk appears to have a leg up on Julian Vandervelde for the backup center spot. Adam Caplan suggested Boyko has a good chance to make the roster, so we gave him the nod for the final spot here.

Early Thoughts On Draft Class Fits -
Does Agholor become an instant starter, as many observers think? He didn't just walk into the lineup in the spring, as Riley Cooper and Josh Huff and Jordan Matthews appeared to be at the head of the back, with Miles Austin and Agholor getting a ton of reps as well. He looked good. He's going to help this year. And Agholor has a very, very bright future in this offense and in the NFL.

Chip Kelly's Eagles makeover earns a 'C' -- for now - ESPN
It wasn’t surprising that Kelly released Cary Williams and let fellow cornerback Bradley Fletcher and safety Nate Allen walk away in free agency. The Eagles' secondary was a major problem the past two seasons, and it broke down repeatedly during the Eagles’ season-ruining three-game losing streak in December. And it wasn’t surprising when Kelly then dangled $63 million in front of Seattle cornerback Byron Maxwell. Kelly also signed nickel cornerback Walter Thurmond to compete for the other starting spot. But when minicamp rolled around, Thurmond was lining up at safety, a position the Eagles have struggled to fill since Brian Dawkins' departure in 2009. Second-round draft pick Eric Rowe is playing cornerback, so the Eagles didn’t sign or draft a true safety to replace Allen. They might wind up regretting that.

Washington NFL team condemns hateful symbol - SB Nation
The team no longer wants to be associated in any way with a visual and verbal remanent of the subjugation and violent murder visited upon an entire ethnic group over a bloody and demeaning 400 years of American history.
