According to a report from ESPN NFL Insiders Adam Schefter and Adam Caplan, veteran running back Frank Gore will be signing with the Philadelphia Eagles when 2015 NFL free agency officially begins this week on Tuesday, March 10. Schefter notes that Gore himself has told people of his intentions.
Philadelphia's interest in Gore first emerged on Saturday night via a report from NJ.com. On Sunday afternoon, Rand Getlin of Yahoo! Sports reported that the Eagles offered Gore a contract worth around $5 million per year with $7 million guaranteed. Adam Schefter confirms that Gore will make $7.5 million guaranteed over the first two years of a three-year contract.
Gore, who will turn 32 in May, has been in the league since the San Francisco 49ers drafted him in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft. In 148 career games, he's rushed for 11,073 yards and 64 touchdowns on 2442 attempts for a career average of 4.5. He's also recorded 342 receptions for 2,883 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Running backs typically don't age well, so this signing comes as a bit of a surprise. Gore might be a bit of an exception. He's only played less than 12 games in one season, and that was 2011. In 2014, he rushed for 1,106 yards and four touchdown on 255 carries for a 4.3 average. For perspective, former Eagles running back LeSean McCoy rushed for 4.2 yards per carry last season.
Speaking of McCoy, that's who Gore will be replacing. It's unclear exactly how the Eagles will split up the carries. With Gore in the fold and McCoy being sent to Buffalo, the Eagles will have five running backs under contract: Gore, Darren Sproles, Chris Polk, Matthew Tucker, and Kenjon Barner.
