UPDATE: Matthews has officially signed with the Vikings, per the team. Original story below.
According to NFL media's Ian Rapoport, free agent linebacker Casey Matthews visited the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday. This is the first time Matthews' name has really come up since free agency started.
The much-maligned Matthews was one of the least popular players during his time in Philadelphia. After being drafted in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Matthews was handed playing time at inside linebacker as a rookie despite never really earning it. He predictably struggled and quickly fell out of favor.
Matthews was forced into action last season when the Eagles suffered a plethora of injuries at inside linebacker. The former Oregon Ducks player split time with Emmanuel Acho at inside linebacker. While Matthews wasn't good by any means, he arguably played above (incredibly low) expectations.
The Eagles haven't expressed any interest in retaining Matthews. Just the opposite, really. The Eagles added Kiko Alonso in the offseason and he will wear the No. 50 jersey number, which was previously worn by Matthews . Chip Kelly apparently plans on keeping DeMeco Ryans around as well. Veteran inside linebacker Brad Jones was signed to a short-term deal. Philadelphia will also see Najee Goode return back from injury.
If Matthews catches on in Minnesota, he'd get to face his brother and Packers linebacker Clay Matthews at least twice a season. Matthews' mom, Leslie, spoke about her sons with BGN Radio last fall.
