Chip Kelly explains why Eagles worked out Tim Tebow

New, comments

The Eagles coach is a fan of the former NFL quarterback.

The Eagles followed a crazy week of free agency earlier this month with news last week that the team worked out Tim Tebow. The former first round pick is a lightning rod when it comes to media attention so the workout obviously made headlines.

In an interview that will air on NFL Total Access on Monday night (7 PM ET), Kelly explained why the team gave Tebow a workout. The explanation was simple:

"I've always been a fan of Tim. We bring in a lot of players for private workouts, it's just he's the one that everyone keeps talking about. We brought in Terrelle Pryor for a workout and Thad Lewis in for a workout. When players are available for you to work them out it's the same thing of going to the Veteran Combine or going to the Super Regional Combine. It's getting an exposure to a player so that when you have to make a decision and say 'Hey, what are we going to do now. You say, I don't know anything about these players. Let's bring them in and work them out, and it may be too late at that point in time.' So all we're doing is just doing our homework."

It probably doesn't hurt that Kelly has connections with some of Tebow's former coaches. Kelly has a tight relationship with current Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, who oversaw Tebow's time at Florida. Kelly is obviously also close with New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who is the last NFL coach Tebow played under.

There was an odd report last week indicating there's an 80% chance the Ealges will sign Tebow if they trade Matt Barkley (who is reportedly on the block). If the Eagles really wanted Tebow by now, however, they could have just signed him.
