Ryan Mathews signs with Eagles, despite DeMarco Murray deal

Two veteran backs will replace LeSean McCoy.

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

The Eagles will have both Ryan Mathews and DeMarco Murray on the roster this season. Mathews has signed a three-year, $11.5 million deal with the Eagles, according to the team.

The Eagles will now have a three-headed monster heading into Chip Kelly's third season as head coach. Murray, Mathews and Darren Sproles will probably be considered the best trio of backs in the league and likely make the Eagles an even more run-dominant offense. The team has spent a boatload of money over the last two seasons on the position and it's clear that Kelly is making it a serious priority.

The Eagles probably didn't expect to sign both Mathews and Murray, but after shelling out some serious cash, were able to convince both to come to Philadelphia. Their added presence will likely take a lot pressure off newly-acquired quarterback Sam Bradford.

It remains to be seen how these moves will impact restricted free agent Chris Polk.
