Redskins beat Giants, and the Eagles are somehow only one game back in the awful NFC East

Football is stupid.

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The NFC East is a terrible, awful, stupid division this year. The Washington Redskins are now in first place after defeating the New York Giants on Sunday by a final score of 20 to 14. What's even more ridiculous is that the Philadelphia Eagles, who are 4-7 and have been outscored 90 to 31 in their last two games, are only ONE GAME BACK out of first place. Here's a look at the updated NFC East standings:

NFC EAST

1) Washington Redskins: 5-6
2) New York Giants: 5-6
3) Philadelphia Eagles: 4-7
4) Dallas Cowboys: 3-8

...

Let's be real: the Eagles have no business even thinking about the playoffs. They're playing awful football right now. There's not a lot of reason to believe they'll turn things around, either. The Birds have five games left: at the New England Patriots, versus the Buffalo Bills, versus the Arizona Cardinals, versus Washington, and at the New York Giants. The Eagles are definitely losing to the currently undefeated Pats, and they could easily lose out. In fact, it's probably better if they don't win any more games. (More on this topic tomorrow.)

But if you're crazy and somehow still believe in this Eagles team, at least you can say they're mathematically alive.
