The Philadelphia Eagles are now 4-7 on the 2015 NFL regular season schedule after being defeated by the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving by a final score of 45 to 14. Here are 10 thoughts from this awful game.
1) I don't know how Chip Kelly survives this
Remember when the Eagles were up 16-3 on the Miami Dolphins less than two weeks ago? It feels like forever ago now. The Eagles have been a mess ever since. Philadelphia has been outscored 107 to 34 in their last 11 quarters. That's awful. It's no secret who's to blame for this mess. This all falls on Chip Kelly. This is the team he built. It's his job to prepare these players to play. The Eagles are not a well-coached football team. It's only bound to get worse before it gets better. The Eagles have some tough games down the stretch here. There have already been reports about Kelly losing the locker room and potentially even losing his job. Can Kelly really turn this mess around? I just don't see it.
2) At least, the Eagles need to fire Chip Kelly as a general manager
Maybe Kelly somehow survives this. I don't think it's likely right now, but Jeffrey Lurie was patient with Andy Reid so maybe he'll be patient here too. But if Kelly stays, it's pretty clear he shouldn't have final say on personnel any longer. This team needs more talent, and Kelly hasn't proved capable of improving the roster.
3) How did the defense get so bad?
I know everyone is upset at Billy Davis, and rightfully so, but let's not act like the defense has been this bad all season. It was actually pretty good heading up into Week 10. But now that doesn't really matter much because it's just awful. The turnovers have dried up and the Eagles can't stop anyone now. The Eagles have never allowed back-to-back 45+ point games in franchise history until today. What happened? How did this go from being an above average unit (at least) to looking like one of the worst in the league.
4) The Eagles need to start from scratch on offense
Philadelphia's defense being so awful kind of took attention away from the fact the Eagles offense is still horrendous. The team needs a lot of upgrades on that side of the ball. The main one is quarterback, obviously. The running back position needs to be better. DeMarco Murray is so slow and overpaid. Young wide receivers such as Jordan Matthews, Nelson Agholor, and Josh Huff need to step up while Miles Austin and Riley Cooper need to be cut after this season if not immediately. The offensive line needs more talent.
The sad part about this is that the Eagles put big investments into their offense already. They traded a second round pick for Sam Bradford. They gave Murray a huge contract. They spent a first on Agholor, a second on Matthews, and a third on Huff. They are not getting good return on those decisions.
The coaching needs to be better, too. If Kelly somehow stays, he can't bring back the same offensive staff. A lot of those guys, including "offensive coordinator" Pat Shurmur, have to go.
5) The Eagles need a real franchise quarterback
Finding a quarterback is really the biggest thing. This should really be the No. 1 point on this list until they actually find one. It might be possible if the Eagles get a high pick. I'm generally against the idea of tanking in football, but wins don't really benefit this franchise at this point. Bradford isn't a franchise quarterback. The Eagles need to find one in the draft. Pairing a new head coach with a new young quarterback would be ideal.
6) Are you happy that you're right or sad that the Eagles are losing?
Some people are way more happy Chip Kelly is failing than sad that the Eagles are losing.

This is more of a pet peeve of mine than a real issue with the team itself. It's just that I see a lot of "I told you so!" as if people want a trophy for being right about Kelly's moves not working out. It's like they've almost been rooting against the team. Well, congrats. Here's your trophy. The team is awful and you're miserable. Great job. You were right.
7) The Patriots are going to beat the crap out of this team
Has there ever been a surer loss? If the Buccaneers and Lions can each score 45 points against this Eagles team, can you imagine what Tom Brady and the Patriots are going to do?
8) There are only five games left!
This is honestly the best thing going right now. It's been such a miserable season. At least it's almost over.
9) This is just a placeholder so I can get to 10
I couldn't think of 10 thoughts, so I'm cheating here to get to 10. I couldn't let the Eagles be the only thing that lets you down on Thanksgiving.
10) I don't know where the team goes from here
Changes are coming. I don't know when, and I don't know what exactly will change, but it's only a matter of time. Right? I think so. I don't know what the future holds, but there is a lot of work to be done. This is a big mess that needs to be cleaned up.
