Philadelphia Eagles running back Ryan Mathews could suit up against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football despite being listed as questionable to play, according to a report from Ian Rapoport. More details:
He may have to work out pregame to be sure, but there is optimism that #Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (groin) will play tonight.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 19, 2015
As noted, Mathews might have to prove he can play by having a good workout prior to the game. The same might be true for Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
Mathews suffered a groin injury during practice leading up to this week's game. He was added to Friday's injury report as a limited participant after being fully healthy earlier in the week.
There is no question that Mathews has been more productive than starting running back DeMarco Murray so far. Mathews has 205 yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries while Murray only has 130 yards and two touchdowns on 49 carries. Having Mathews healthy is important for the Eagles.
Even with Mathews potentially playing, however, Philadelphia's ground game is set to go up a tough, run-stopping Giants defense. New York allows the second least amount of yards per rush attempt. The Eagles might have a tough time running the ball efficiently.
