The last time we polled Kelly's approval was back in early December when the Eagles were 9-3. The Birds were coming off a big Thanksgiving win in Dallas. Their chances of making the playoffs looked very favorable. But then things went awry. The Eagles lost three games in a row to the Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington Redskins which led to them being eliminated from the playoffs entirely. Philadelphia finished the season on a positive note with a "meaningless" win in New York over the Giants.
The mistakes made by the 2014 Eagles were the ones that were being avoided in 2013. The Eagles turned the ball over too much, gave up too many big plays on defense, and didn't operate efficiently enough in the red zone. While these problems are nuanced, ultimately the responsibility falls on the head coach.
Moving forward, it's especially up to Kelly to get things fixed. Due to the Eagles power structure change, Kelly will now oversee the team's player personnel department. The coach will be responsible for hiring a new (de facto) general manager to assist him in picking players. Kelly has proved to be a good head coach but he needs to prove he can be good when it comes to player evaluation and acquisition. Only 68% of voters approve of Kelly receiving his new power.
So, do you approve of the job Chip Kelly has done as the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles? Vote now in the poll below and leave your thoughts in the comments.
