The Eagles power struggle saga has resulted in a new structure in Philadelphia. Chip Kelly will now oversee the team's player personnel department while Howie Roseman has been "promoted" from general manager to the role of Executive Vice President of Football Operations. I put "promoted" in quotes because many see the the new role as a demotion of sorts.
My reaction to the Eagles new power structure can be found here. Here is the reaction from other media members. As you can gather, there is a common theme.
Sounds like Chip wins this round
— Les Bowen (@LesBowen) January 2, 2015
So it sounds as if Chip just got the same power Andy Reid once had and Howie is doing cap/contract stuff and out of personnel evals.
— Geoff Mosher (@GeoffMosherCSN) January 2, 2015
Wow. Strong resolution for Chip Kelly. A promotion that's really a demotion for Howie.
— Reuben Frank (@RoobCSN) January 2, 2015
Definitely sounds like a win for Chip. Has a lot more personnel power. Pressure is on him now to win with that power.
— Geoff Mosher (@GeoffMosherCSN) January 2, 2015
Chip Kelly now overseeing all personnel matters. Howie will focus solely on contracts. Kelly wins. Roseman loses.
— Reuben Frank (@RoobCSN) January 2, 2015
Roseman's "promotion" seems like huge demotion to me, but my name is mud on here now, so ...
— Nick Fierro (@NickFierro) January 2, 2015
I believe Jeff Lurie took the best possible course of action for the long-term health of the franchise.
— Reuben Frank (@RoobCSN) January 2, 2015
Biggest takeaways: (1) Chip gets full player personnel control. Team will sink or swim based on his decisions - draft, free agency, etc.
— Sheil Kapadia (@SheilKapadia) January 2, 2015
And (2): Roseman's desire has been to be viewed as talent evaluator and more than a cap/contracts guy. Not happening now with new role.
— Sheil Kapadia (@SheilKapadia) January 2, 2015
Biggest move here: Chip has everything he wants. He has the "juice" which is key. No more ambiguity.
— Adam Caplan (@caplannfl) January 2, 2015
Based on Jeff Lurie's statement, sounds as if Chip's personnel guy hire will be the new GM.
— Geoff Mosher (@GeoffMosherCSN) January 2, 2015
Chip said on Monday that Howie was good with the cap. Well, now that is basically his whole job in terms of the roster. #Eagles
— Eliot Shorr-Parks (@EliotShorrParks) January 2, 2015
With Chip in full control now would it surprise anybody if he gave up the farm to land Mariota? #Eagles
— Ed Kracz (@kracze) January 2, 2015
Well, at least Howie Roseman won control of the equipment staff. He's got that going for him.
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) January 2, 2015
Remember at Chip's opening press conference when he was asked about whether he wants final say? Two years in, here's the answer.
— Zach Berman (@ZBerm) January 2, 2015
in 2001 Lurie sided with Andy Reid over Tom Modrak. A couple of years ago Lurie sided with Reid over Joe Banner. Lurie values a great coach.
— Tommy Lawlor (@lawlornfl) January 2, 2015
My report Howie Roseman or Bob LaMonte was trying to flirt with Jets makes more sense now. He was looking for an out after losing struggle.
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) January 2, 2015
The fact that the personnel staff will report to Chip Kelly is a pretty massive piece of power. He already had final say over Eagles' 53.
— Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) January 2, 2015
This sort of reshuffling occurred about 12yrs ago too!!
— Ike Reese (@Ike58Reese) January 2, 2015
Lurie announces changes: Kelly gains full control of personnel. What they said, and what it means right here. http://t.co/USUqfZA0PO
— Sheil Kapadia (@SheilKapadia) January 2, 2015
Jeff Lurie is many things. Dummy isn't one of them.
— Nick Fierro (@NickFierro) January 2, 2015
.@udkyle @Eagles not a chance Gamble comes back.
— Howard Eskin (@howardeskin) January 3, 2015
Yes, or Lord Supreme, if you prefer. RT @coach_coolin3: so is Chip essentially the new GM?
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) January 3, 2015
Chip gets to hire the new GM instead of the other way around. He essentially has Belichick status with a 20-12 record.
— Geoff Mosher (@GeoffMosherCSN) January 3, 2015
Welcome to the Chipadelphia #Eagles. http://t.co/G8crjlV54Y
— Tommy Lawlor (@lawlornfl) January 3, 2015
With Chip Kelly able to hire his own GM, he technically won't have to deal with Howie Roseman face-to-face. He could use a go-between.
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) January 3, 2015
Still much to be learned. Lurie said the decision was made without threat or demands from Chip. Yet Eagles went from firing Gamble to this.
— Zach Berman (@ZBerm) January 3, 2015
Chip Kelly, Jan. '13: "I’ve heard questions that I want control...That has never been an issue. ...I’m a football coach. I’m not a GM."
— Zach Berman (@ZBerm) January 3, 2015
One name to keep in mind for Chip's new GM: Todd Brunner. Currently w/ Seattle, formally SF. Also a NJ native. Big on West coast. #Eagles
— Eliot Shorr-Parks (@EliotShorrParks) January 3, 2015
And lest anyone be mistaken, Chip Kelly had an enormous impact on Eagles personnel well before today's announcement.
