The 2014 NFL preseason has barely even started but we already have a 2015 Super Bowl prediction and it involves the Philadelphia Eagles.
During Sunday night's Hall of Game game that featured the New York Giants squaring off against the Buffalo Bills in virtually meaningless preseason action, NBC Sunday Night Football color commentator Cris Collinsworth was asked for a 2014 Super Bowl prediction. Here's what Collinsworth had to say, via CBS Philly:
"You know the team that I think will have a chance this year, is the Philadelphia Eagles. I just feel like Chip Kelly and what they did in that first year with that offense, I know they didn’t get it all in, and this year maybe a little bit more advanced Nick Foles. So I’m kind of keeping my eye on the Philadelphia Eagles."
Collinsworth also noted said he'd take Eagles running back LeSean McCoy with the number one overall pick in fantasy football, which certainly isn't a bad idea.
Collinsworth's Eagles prediction caused a bit of a stir online. At one point "Super Bowl" was apparently trending on Twitter in Philadelphia.
Say what you want about Collinsworth, but I don't think he's that far off-base. I wouldn't necessarily call the Eagles a favorite to win the Super Bowl because I don't think they're in that tier of top teams in the NFL yet... but they're certainly capable of being a playoff team. Especially in an unimpressive NFC East landscape. The NFL playoffs can be a bit of a crap-shoot so just making the post-season can be good enough sometimes. The parity is high and anything can happen.
But I guess we shouldn't be getting too ahead of ourselves here. Heck, the Eagles are still a few days away from playing their first 2014 preseason game...
