According to an official statement from the team, Philadelphia Eagles safety Keelan Johnson has been excused from Eagles training camp for an undetermined amount of time. Read the full statement below:
The Philadelphia Eagles today announced they have excused safety Keelan Johnson from Training Camp for an undetermined amount of time as he tends to matters related to his arrest in Arizona last weekend. Johnson, who will still count on the team’s 90-man roster, met with head coach Chip Kelly on Thursday in Philadelphia. Since it is a pending legal matter, the team will have no further comment.
Johnson was arrested in Tempe, Arizona near Arizona State University earlier this week. He was charged with assaulting a police officer, passively resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
Johnson's next court date is set for August 1st, which is exactly one week before the Eagles first preseason game against the Bears. The fact that Johnson will be missing time certainly won't help his roster chances. Johnson is likely fighting for a backup job with other Eagles defensive backs such as Davon Morgan, Daytawian Lowe and fifth round draft pick Ed Reynolds.
