Eagles closing in on a deal with first round pick Marcus Smith

The Eagles are close to having their entire 2014 NFL draft class signed, according to a report.

According to Yahoo! Sports reporter and legal analyst Rand Getlin, the Philadelphia Eagles are closing in on a contract with rookie outside linebacker Marcus Smith.

Smith was the Eagles' first selection in the 2014 NFL Draft. The Eagles originally were scheduled to pick at No. 22 but they made a trade with the Cleveland Browns in order to move down to No. 26 and pick up a third round selection as well. At pick No. 26, the Eagles drafted Smith.

Smith is the only remaining Eagles draft pick from the team's 2014 NFL draft class that is still unsigned. Jordan Matthews, Josh Huff, Jaylen Watkins, Taylor Hart, Ed Reynolds, and Beau Allen have all been signed for a while now.

Thanks to the new CBA (2011), there really isn't reason to ever be worried about rookie contracts anymore. The deals are slotted and there's not much room for negotiation. Still, it's better to get things done sooner than later. And it looks like the Eagles are very close to doing just that.
