2014 NFL Mock Draft: Zack Martin to the Baltimore Ravens

With the 17th overall pick in the 2014 Bleeding Green Nation community mock draft, Baltimore GM rohan915 selects ...

USA TODAY Sports

Zack Martin, OT, Notre Dame

The Ravens' offensive line was a joke last year and that's putting it mildly. The Ravens finished tied for fourth-most sacks (48) allowed in the NFL. The Ravens total rushing offense averaged just 74.3 yds per game. While some of the blame can be attributed to Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce, the lion's share of the blame can be given to the Ravens' offensive line.  Enter Zack Martin.

Zack Martin (6'4 308lbs) from Notre Dame is the most versatile offensive lineman in this draft. Though listed as OG, he played both tackle and guard at the Senior Bowl. Martin was able to stop defenders at both spots effectively. However, Zack Martin lacks "elite tackle size". Zack Martin's biggest strength is the fact GMs know what they are getting with him. He's not a world-beater in any one category,  but he's extremely solid across the board.

He has been compared to Logan Mankins, Sam Baker, and Marshal Yanda . Mike Mayock has said that he thinks "He's very similar to Justin Pugh (Giants 2013 1st round draft pick)... but I think Martin's a better prospect."

It also does not hurt that the Ravens have had experience converting a college tackle into a good guard. Marshal Yanda was initially a tackle and now is an All-Pro Guard for the Ravens.

All in all this a good pick for the Ravens because they get a great versatile offensive lineman. I was strongly considering picking a WR like Brandin Cooks here, but I figured the Ravens could have a chance in getting a solid WR like Jordan Matthews or Martavis Bryant in the 2nd.

Fun Fact: Zack Martin graduated from the Mendoza School of Business in Notre Dame
