NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock recently released a list of his position rankings for the 2014 NFL Draft. Mayock ranked the top five players at each position. On Tuesday, BGN revisited the top five wide receivers. Today's focus shifts to the defensive side of the ball.
It's no secret that the Eagles still very much need help in the secondary. Last year, the Eagles allowed the second most opponent passing yards per game. However, that statistic is a volume number which doesn't account for how often the Eagles' defense was on the field last year. A more relevant number shows that the Eagles ranked 23rd in opponent yards per pass attempt. That's definitely not one of the worst in the league, but it's still below average.
The Eagles have viable starting options in their secondary. Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher will likely start on the outside. It's possible Nolan Carroll could steal a starting job with a good preseason. At safety, Malcolm Jenkins was brought in to be a starter. Nate Allen and Earl Wolff can compete for the other safety job. The problem here is that none of these options are particularly appealing. Most, but not all, of these players don't also seem to be long-term options. The Eagles could easily address the secondary early in the draft.
Here are the top five cornerbacks and safeties, as ranked by Mayock:
Rank | Cornerbacks | HT | WT |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Darqueze Dennard, Michigan State | 5-11 | 199 |
2 | Kyle Fuller, Virginia Tech | 6-0 | 190 |
3 | Justin Gilbert, Oklahoma State | 6-0 | 202 |
4 | Bradley Roby, Ohio State | 5-11 | 194 |
5 | Jason Verrett, TCU | 5-9 | 189 |
Mayock's CB rankings don't look too different from when he last released them. The only change is that Kyle Fuller moved up to the No. 2 spot and Justin Gilbert dropped. The Eagles are in luck that the top corners have size and length. Those are the kind of corners that the Eagles seem to covet.
Rank | Safety | HT | WT |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Alabama | 6-1 | 208 |
2 | Calvin Pryor, Louisville | 5-11 | 207 |
3 | Jimmie Ward, Northern Illinois | 5-11 | 193 |
4 | Deone Bucannon, Washingon State | 6-1 | 211 |
5 | Lamarcus Joyner, Florida State | 5-8 | 184 |
At safety, Calvin Pryor dropped down from being the number one option. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix is now back on top.
Which defensive back(s) do you see the Eagles walking away with in the draft?
