Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
The Rams could have used this pick on Greg Robinson. However, the top three tackles in this draft (Robinson, Matthews and Lewan) are all top tier tackles, and at least one of them should be available at #13. If the Rams pass on Sammy Watkins at #2, their chances of snagging Mike Evans at #13 are quite low. After Watkins and Evans, there is a drop-off in the WR category.
Therefore, the Rams should go with Watkins at #2. If Sam Bradford needs to show what he can do in the league, he needs a quality wideout on the outside. With Tavon Austin in the slot and Watkins on the outside, Bradford would have stud receivers to throw to.
Must Reads
Watkins is a gifted prospect, who has great footwork, route runner and is a doozy after the catch. He tracks the ball well, and highpoints the ball with his hands. He has great hands, and is a threat down the field. He is that receiver who will produce whether he has a young quarterback, an elite quarterback or a Brandon Weeden throwing to him. He has the hands and body control to catch bad passes.
This is a receiver who is so talented that he makes his quarterback look better than he really is (Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Josh Gordon) not a receiver who looks better because of strong QB play (Wes Welker, Eric Decker, etc.). His most unique trait is that he is a bruiser after the catch. Instead of using his agility to get away from corners, Watkins initiates contact with smaller corners, making him difficult to tackle, and causing other defenders to be afraid of him.
Overall, Watkins is the most complete wideout in this DEEP draft class and has the best chance of being a stud in the pros.
