Would Jay Gruden rather have Jeremy Maclin than DeSean Jackson?

Never stop talking, Jay Gruden.

If you thought the comments made by Jay Gruden regarding his complete lack of confidence in Robert Griffin III were bizarre, take a look at what he had to say about DeSean Jackson. Quotes via CSN Philly's Reuben Frank from a Tuesday morning conference call.

"He’s a very good wide receiver but . . . the last couple weeks he’s been dealing with an injury and he hasn’t been quite the same. I’m a ‘what-have-you-done-for-me-lately’ kind of guy and lately we haven’t seen the DeSean we need to see."

This isn't the first time Gruden has slammed Jackson in the media. Prior to the Eagles-Redskins game in Week 3, Gruden oddly criticized Jackson amid laughter for his lack of blocking ability.

"I think he’s going to be a game day type deal. He wants to go really bad obviously, he’s going back to Philly, but if he’s not 100%, if he’s 60-70%, he’s really not that [much] good to us. {laughter} He’ s already 160 pounds. If he’s only ….{laughter} He’s already a very terrible blocker."

Maybe Gruden would rather have a current Eagles wide receiver. Washington's coach had high praise for Philadelphia's Jeremy Maclin, whom Gruden spent a few days with prior to the 2009 NFL Combine.

"He’s a consistent pro, man. I love the way he plays, his approach to the football game. . . .  He’s tough and it seems like whenever Philly needs a big play, third down and long or they’re trailing, Maclin seems to always show up. Type of guy you want. Accountable guys that when the game’s on the line they have no problem making the play, and Jeremy’s done that."

Maclin is having a career season. In 14 starts, the Eagles receiver has recorded 78 receptions for 1,207 yards (15.5 yards per reception) and 10 touchdowns. He's only dropped one pass on 128 targets. Jackson has caught 50 receptions for 957 yards (19.1 yards per reception) and five touchdowns. He's also dropped four passes. Jackson's blocking grade ranks 109th out of 113 wide receivers.
