The 2013 NFL season is over, so it's time to look back at the season and hand out some awards. SBNation.com released their picks earlier this week. Each NFL blogger had a vote. Here are the final results and how they stack up against my ballot:
SB Nation NFL
Offensive MVP: Peyton Manning
This was the easiest selection SB Nation's bloggers voted on. Peyton Manning as the MVP was unanimous among these bloggers, and you can't blame them. Manning is the only choice this year. Despite impressive seasons by others such as LeSean McCoy and Jamaal Charles, Manning stands head and shoulders above everyone else.
BLG vote: Peyton Manning. Not much to say here. Obvious choice.
Defensive MVP: Robert Quinn
Quinn's final numbers: 57 tackles, 19 sacks, 7 forced fumbles. The star defensive end shows up in big games. Three sacks against the nearly playoff-bound Cardinals, three more against Seattle, two against Indy and New Orleans. His 19 sacks are a team record, surpassing Kevin Carter's 17 in 1999, and put him just a half sack off this year's sack champion Robert Mathis.
Also receiving votes: Luke Kuechly, Richard Sherman, Robert Mathis, LaVonte David, Karlos Dansby
BLG Vote: Robert Quinn. Simply put, he's a beast. He was the best player at a premium defensive position. 91 total pressures in 477 pass rush snaps is darn impressive.
Coach of the Year: Andy Reid
The Chiefs had the most dramatic turnaround in the NFL this year and much of that praise can be heaped upon Andy Reid. The Chiefs personnel this season wasn't all that different from last, save Alex Smith, but Reid helped the Chiefs go from two wins to 11 wins in one calendar year. Reid brought the professionalism and attitude needed to win which was evident after they reeled off nine straight wins to open the season.
Also receiving votes: Chip Kelly, Bruce Arians, Mike McCoy
BLG Vote: Chip Kelly. Kelly overcame the skepticism from irrational doubters and showed he belongs in the NFL. Kelly overhauled a lackluster 2012 roster with a 4-12 record into 10-6 NFC East champions. Kelly became only the second coach in NFL history to win a division title in his first season on a NFL coaching staff. He also did it entering the season without a clear answer at the most critical position: quarterback. Under Kelly's guidance, the team broke a number of NFL offensive records while the defense overachieved beyond reasonable expectation.
Reid's 9-0 start was impressive, but the level of competition has to be considered. The Chiefs only defeated one team with a winning record (the Eagles, when Michael Vick was still QB) and finished the season with only two wins since November 5th. Both of those wins came over teams picking in the top 5 of the 2014 NFL Draft.
Rookie of the Year: Eddie Lacy
Lacy ended with 284 carries for 1,178 yards (4.1 yards per carry) and 11 touchdowns, despite missing a couple of games early with a concussion. He helped revive the Packers running game, which is a big reason folks thought they could still make a run despite the time Aaron Rodgers missed with a broken collarbone. A consistent rushing attack with Rodgers behind center ready to strike is dangerous. Lacy made teams respect him.
Also receiving votes: Keenan Allen, Kiko Alonso, Sheldon Richardson
BLG Vote: Eddie Lacy is the pick. He's talented and his tough running style is fun to watch. If I had to pick a defensive rookie of the year, it would have been Richardson.
Super Bowl pick: Seahawks
It's easy to see why the most SB Nation NFL bloggers picked the Seahawks to win it all. They're one of the best teams with arguably the top home-field advantage in the playoff field. The Seahawks are balanced, ranking eighth in offense and first in defense. They have one of the best young quarterbacks in Russell Wilson buoyed by a dominant rushing attack. Perhaps most importantly, they have already demonstrated they can beat the remaining playoff teams in the Panthers, 49ers and Saints. The second most popular choice for Super Bowl winner was the Denver Broncos.
BLG Vote: Eagles. Yeah, that's right. And I wasn't the only one! There was at least one other blogger who picked the Birds to win it all. Unfortunately, that won't be the case now... but there was reason to believe the Eagles could get hot and shock the world. Right? I had the Eagles facing the Broncos in the Super Bowl, so now that the Eagles are eliminated, I'll go back to picking to the Broncos to win it all.
