Matt Mullin and Mike Sielski of Philly.com/Inquirer are reporting that Eagles President Don Smolenski said the team is likely to make a bid for a future Philadelphia Super Bowl if this weekend's Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium "goes well." Eagles owner Jeff Lurie's interest for a Philly Super Bowl has been on record since last year.
Philadelphia has never hosted a Super Bowl before. The big game usually takes place somewhere where the weather is pleasant and/or the stadium is covered by a dome. But the success of a cold weather, outdoors Super Bowl such as the one taking place on Sunday could lead to more happening in the future. And why not Philadelphia?
The Eagles' effort to have a Philly-hosted Super Bowl coincidences with their two year, $125 million Lincoln Financial Field revitalization plan, which is scheduled to be complete by August 2014. A recently announced partnership with Panasonic will goes towards adding giant new video boards to the stadium.
The earliest Super Bowl that Philadelphia could host would not be before 2017, so don't expect one too soon, but it's certainly looking like a real possibility down the road. There are a number of drawbacks for a city hosting this event, but there's also a lot of fun to be had. And who doesn't like fun?
