Super Bowl 2014: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie Considering Retirement if the Broncos Win

Former Eagles and current Broncos cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie revealed to the media that he might retire if the Broncos win the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl XLVIII week just started and there's already a lot of madness taking place. Former Eagles and current Denver Broncos cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, lovably known as DRC, is apparently considering retirement if the Broncos win the Super Bowl.

OK, well maybe that doesn't sound so crazy. Plenty of well-seasoned players decide to hang their gear up one last time once they get that ring. See: Ray Lewis, last year. The only issue here is DRC isn't a 38 year old veteran like Ray Lewis. He's a 27 year old who's only been in the NFL since 2008.

What's crazier is that DRC is scheduled to be a free agent this offseason, having only signed a one-year deal with Broncos last year. DRC is coming off a year where he seemed to have played fairly well in Denver, and easily could be considered one of the best cornerbacks available in the free agent market. Retiring this early would mean passing up on a potentially big payday. But maybe DRC is aware of all that and just doesn't want to play football anymore. Eagles fans wouldn't be quick to deny DRC's lack of intensity. They are quick to forget his tenure in Philly, however. And so is he.

While DRC flashed the potential at times that showed why the Eagles traded Kevin Kolb away to get him, his effort was drawn into question and likely led to the end of his brief tenure in Philly. The Eagles had the option to sign him in free agency last year but didn't seem to be interested in bringing him back. Instead, the Birds ended up with free agent signings Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher. Both Williams and Fletcher were much improved tacklers compared to DRC. Each had solid seasons.

Time will tell if DRC holds true to his word. If I had to bet, I'd expect him to keep playing. But who knows with DRC? He's just a unique guy.
