Senior Bowl practice notes: Day 2 - JimmyK, Philly.com
The best player on the field today was Auburn DE Dee Ford. He was unblockable around the edge with his speed rush, and once he had opposing tackles leaning too far outside, he was beating them inside as well. There was one play in which he beat the LT around the corner, but the QB got the ball out quickly to the opposite side of the field. Ford just kept right on trucking after the football, and caught the play from behind. His estimated path to the receiver.
Senior Bowl – Day 2 - Tommy Lawlor, ScoutsNotebook
WR Jordan Matthews is an interesting kid. I love his size. He will make some really tough catches that impress you. But he doesn’t have naturally soft hands. Watch him in warm-ups and you’ll see he’s not the same at catching the ball as someone like Cody Hoffman of BYU. Hoffman can effortlessly pluck the ball. Matthews has drops each day and that problem shows up on tape as well. I think you can work on that with coaching, but he just doesn’t have great hands and there is only so much you can do about that.

Jordan Zumwalt/LB/UCLA: We mentioned Chris Borland as one of the better linebackers from Monday's practice. Today it was Zumwalt's turn to impress scouts and the UCLA linebacker was the most impressive defender on the field. From the beginning, Zumwalt was dominant, showing great force in pass-rush drills, speed and quickness defending the run as well as the ability to get outside the box in pursuit. Throughout, Zumwalt, 6-foot-4, 231, played with nonstop intensity, so much so that coaches politely asked him to dial it down a bit. Zumwalt presented himself as second-round material, something which could come to fruition if the competitive linebacker turns in good workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Eagles eye outside linebackers at Senior Bowl - Jeff McLane, Inquirer
A year after they passed on drafting a traditional 3-4 outside linebacker, the Eagles appear primed to fill a need after spending a season with converted defensive ends at those spots. Ideally, the Eagles want outside linebackers who can rush the passer, set the edge, and drop into coverage on both sides. That versatility poses challenges for opposing offenses.
New QB Coach - Tommy Lawlor, Iggles Blitz
The Eagles needed to hire a QB coach who had experience. They couldn’t afford to go with a young coach since Nick Foles is in such a critical stage in his career. He’s an ascending player, but still needs work. He needs a coach who has successfully developed QBs already. Musgrave fits this description. He’s also worked well with bigger QBs that are mostly pocket passers. Kinda sounds like Nick Foles. The Eagles passing game is a mixture of the spread and the WCO. Musgrave knows how to teach QBs the footwork needed to run the WCO. That is a timing based offense and it is critical for the QB to be precise with his steps so that he can get the ball out on time. Receivers will be at specific landmarks and need the ball at the right time. I like the fact that Musgrave has worked with so many young QBs. That tells you he knows how to teach and that’s important since Foles still has a lot of learning left to do.

Surprisingly, when the season opened, Kelly’s offense lacked the tight end emphasis seen in the preseason. He leaned heavily on 11 personnel -- three receivers, one tight end -- with Celek and Ertz subbing for each other. Casey, the crown jewel of the team’s offensive free-agent signings, barely sniffed the field. Naturally, the perception that Casey wouldn’t see the next two years of his contract surfaced after the season, that he doesn’t fit the offense and that his price tag is too high for a third-string tight end. But it’s important to know two things when looking forward to the Eagles’ offense in 2014: One, Kelly’s offense changed every year during his five seasons at Oregon, always adapting to different personnel. Two, the economics of the NFL guarantee that Kelly’s offense will be forced to adapt going forward. Don’t assume anything about 2014 based on 2013’s results.

Eagles center Jason Kelce, who feeds footballs to quarterbacks professionally, has agreed to feed his face with chicken wings at Wing Bowl 22. "No question, I would love to eat in the event. No doubt," he told Angelo Cataldi and company on SportsRadio 94 WIP's Morning Show. "I am saying yes. ... Definitely. Without question," Kelce said.
Buccaneers to hire Jason Licht as general manager - Bucs Nation
Licht has been with the Arizona Cardinals for three seasons, serving as director of player personnel for the first two. He has spent time working with the New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina Panthers and Miami Dolphins in the past, being exposed to a variety of successful front offices. He's been on the staff for four Super Bowl teams, and two Super Bowl winners. Interestingly, he's also worked as an offensive assistant coach with the Dolphins in 1996.
