[UPDATE] Report: Detroit Lions Hire Eagles QB Coach Bill Lazor as Offensive Coordinator

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

According to a report from Ed Werder of ESPN, Eagles quarterback coach Bill Lazor will not be returning to the team's coaching staff in 2014. Lazor has reportedly accepted a job with the Detroit Lions as their offensive coordinator.

The Lions had a head coaching vacancy when Jim Schwartz was fired shortly after the 2013 season. Former Colts head coach and Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell was officially named as the Detroit Lions head coach on Tuesday morning. Caldwell is working quickly to fill out his staff.

It's no secret that Lazor was drawing interest from other teams this offseason. Last week, Lazor reportedly interviewed with the Miami Dolphins for their offensive coordinator job. Lazor's work with Nick Foles and Michael Vick, under the guidance of Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, was obviously attractive to other teams. Tommy Lawlor wrote about the possibility of Lazor moving on a few weeks ago:

Lazor has coached in the NFL and in college. He has been a coordinator and positional assistant. He's only 41 years old, but already has 20 seasons of experience as an assistant coach. That means he knows what he's doing, but is still young enough to have an open mind and be considered a coach on the rise. The older a coach gets, the more he is considered set in his ways, which isn't always an attractive thing. Lazor could be an offensive coordinator candidate at the NFL level.

The loss of Lazor isn't ideal for the Eagles, but it was expected. Lazor has the opportunity to work with some talented players in Detroit such as star receiver Calvin Johnson and quarterback Matthew Stafford.

No word yet on who will replace Lazor as the Eagles next QB coach.

[Note by Brandon Lee Gowton, 01/15/14 11:25 AM EST] It turns out this report was false: Lazor isn't headed to Detroit. Instead, he will be the offensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins.
