The weird streak of the team the Eagles face in their home opener is now over. The San Diego Chargers, whom the Eagles faced in their home opener this year, were eliminated by the Denver Broncos on Sunday night. This "curse" started all the way back in 2009, when Donovan McNabb was the team's starting QB and Michael Vick was just in his first year with the Eagles. Oh, and let's not forget about that Kevin "The Future" Kolb guy.
Here's a look at the teams that the Eagles played in Philadelphia on opening day since 2009 and how those teams finished the season.
2009 - New Orleans Saints
Eagles Home Opener Game: Saints win, 48-22. Kevin Kolb started this game in place of an injured Donovan McNabb.
Final: Beat the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 to win Super Bowl XLIV
2010 - Green Bay Packers
Eagles Home Opener Game: Packers win, 27-20. Kevin Kolb started this game but was knocked out due to a concussion via Clay Matthews. Michael Vick took over and the rest is history.
Final: Beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 to win Super Bowl XLV
2011 - New York Giants
Eagles Home Opener Game: Giants win, 29-16. The Eagles got Nnamdi'd and Giants WR Victor Cruz emerged.
Final: Beat the New England Patriots 21-17 to win Super Bowl XLVI
2012 - Baltimore Ravens
Eagles Home Opener Game: Ravens lose, 24-23. Eagles won this game to go 2-0 on the season! Then they won two more the whole year and finished with a 4-12 record.
Final: Beat the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 to win Super Bowl XLVII
2013 - San Diego Chargers
Eagles Home Opener Game: Chargers win, 33-30. The Bolts hit a game winning FG late in the game to seal the win.
Final: Lost to Denver Broncos in AFC Divisional Round. Streak over!
Of course, this streak was more of a silly coincidence than an actual "curse", but I guess it's nice to know that it's over. Now the Eagles don't have to worry about having to beat themselves in the home opener. And maybe they finally one the big one? Right?
