Getting to know the Eagles: CB Roc Carmichael

The Eagles are looking for a solution in the secondary and on Wednesday, the team made a move toward upgrading the cornerback unit's depth. Philadelphia signed third-year cornerback Rashad "Roc" Carmichael off Houston's practice squad, making him one of several former Texans to join the Eagles' roster this season. While he has been in the league for three years, he does not have a lot of work on his resume.

Carmichael played running back and cornerback in high school and was on an undefeated Gwynn Park High School that won the Maryland state championship in 2005. He was recruited by Virginia Tech to play cornerback and he redshirted in 2006. In his freshman season, Carmichael played mostly special teams. He appeared in 14 games while collecting eight tackles and a pass breakup. He also spent 2008 playing most special teams and had 12 tackles on the season.

Carmichael became a starter as a junior and had 55 tackles (fifth on the team), six pass breakups and four interceptions in 2009. As a senior, he had 40 tackles (31 solo), four interceptions and 11 pass deflections. He ran a 4.53 forty-time at the Combine and a 4.41 forty-time at Virginia Tech's Pro Day in 2011.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound cornerback was taken in the fourth-round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Texans. He hurt his shoulder in his rookie season and was forced to miss the entire year on injured reserve. Last season, Carmichael played in six games, securing nine tackles and a pass deflection in a limited role on defense. He competed for a spot this summer with the Texans but was waived during final cuts in August and was placed on their practice squad.

Carmichael is likely to play special teams and serve as depth at the cornerback position. He has decent size and was a solid tackler in college. Here is a highlight film of Carmichael at Virginia Tech:
