Bleeding Green Nation introduces the "Reno Mahe Award"

If you've been part of Bleeding Green Nation over the last four or five years, you're likely familiar with the "Na Brown Award." The award is given to the player that most excites the Eagles fanbase and media during the offseason, particularly training camp and preseason, before going on to do nothing when the games actually count. Brown was the 130th overall selection (4th round) in 1999. He was a standout at Lehigh two straight years and seemed poised to be a prominent wide receiver in the Eagles offense. By 2002, Brown was playing in the Arena Football League for the Orlando Predators, after posting just 34 catches for 363 yards and two touchdowns during his three-year tenure in Philadelphia.

While the award named after the former Tar Heel is one of the most popular features on BGN, our staff felt that adding a companion award would be a great way to bring in a new era in the website's history. This award would serve as the "Sacko" for the most useless and unneeded player on the roster, as voted by the BGN community. In past years, BGN threads have been filled with distaste to pure hatred for players who took up meaningful spots on the roster and underperformed on the field. Players like Trevor Laws, Eldra Buckley, Lorenzo Booker, Matt Schobel, Chad Hall, Tony Hunt and Jorrick Calvin may have been winners had the award been around previously.

After a long stream of text messages, our staff decided on the proper name for this special honor: "Reno Mahe Award." For those that don't remember, Mahe played five seemingly amazingly pedestrian seasons in Philadelphia. Despite making the All-Pro team in 2005 -- no, seriously, he did, look it up -- as a returner, Andy Reid's token-BYU player never did much else. Mahe employed fair catches like he invented them.

Mahe was with the Eagles from 2003-2007 and really is more of a trivia question answer than he was a player. He is related to fellow former Eagle Vai Sikahema and worked at Chickie's & Pete's during his offseasons. Also, he had one of the most bizarre post-NFL career arrests ever. In 2011, Mahe was booked on second-degree felony charges for his role in the theft of $6,000 worth of gas from a construction company in Utah. He pleaded guilty and received third-degree charges, but no jail time.

The award will be given following (your voices have been heard) final cuts in September. BGN will host a voting process similar to that of the "Na Brown Award." While you may have your front-runners right now, remember that a guy can go from a "Mahe" candidate to a "Brown" nominee in just one offseason (Hunt in 2012). So keep your eyes peeled and your hate on reserve until after the fourth preseason game.

The "Reno Mahe Award" will be given to the player that the fanbase has an overwhelming urge to see cut/shot into outer space. This player will be someone who has been fortunate enough to remain on the roster despite inadequate/fringe talent, overwhelming salary, bust status and/or lack of importance to success. Reno Mahe was a true example of what the award acknowledges, which is a player who sticks around waaaay longer than he should, for reasons that defy acceptable explanation.
