Should the Eagles make a move for Jairus Byrd?

Rick Stewart

The Eagles went out of their way in free agency to immediately sign four secondary players. Coming off a two-year stretch of awfulness with the team's defensive backs, the Eagles have replaced two shaky cornerbacks (Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rogers-Cromartie) with two intriguing but yet-to-be trustworthy free agents (Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher) and added two injury-prone veterans (Pat Chung and Kenny Phillips) to their safety mix. Understandably, Eagles fans and the local media have their worries about the secondary and would like a proven player or two in the defensive backfield.

Former Pro Bowl safety and Oregon Duck Jairus Byrd has yet to sign his franchise tender with the Buffalo Bills. Byrd has been one of the most productive safeties in the league since his rookie year and understandably wants top money for his skills. The Bills were unable to secure Byrd to a long-term deal, which puts them in a rough spot. If they don't resign him before the deadline in mid-July, Byrd could holdout into the season or the Bills may have to trade him.

The Eagles can't feel extremely safe with their safety unit and Howie Roseman is known for making big, out-of-nowhere deals. Byrd played at Oregon while Chip Kelly was their offensive coordinator, so Kelly is at least familiar with him. The Eagles also have a large quantity of cap room to pay the five-year veteran. Byrd would easily be the best player in the secondary and most likely the entire defense. However, the trade price combined with the player's price, could scare the Eagles away. There is also the (likely) chance that the Bills would refuse to part ways with their franchise player.

Would you be willing to deal a 1st or 2nd rounder and change for Byrd? Do you think he could drastically impact the secondary?
