In week 4 of the upcoming NFL season the Eagles will travel to Denver to take on the heavily favored Broncos. Denver is already a 7.5 point favorite and if Peyton Manning with arsenal of WRs (Thomas, Welker, Decker) wasn't enough to contend with, the Eagles will be battling one more thing.
History.
For people who regularly bet NFL games, week 4 for the Eagles is just about the worst spot a team can be in. They are on the road against a non-conference opponent while also having a division game only a week away. In this case they're in Denver with the Giants on the horizon.
Joe Fortenbaugh found that over the last 5 years NFL teams go 12-37 straight-up (.245) and 17-32 against the spread (.347) when playing a non-conference opponent on the road one week before a road date with a divisional rival.
Things get even worse when you consider that the Eagles have been a particularly bad non conference road team in years. They've gone just 3-6-1 over their last 10 games with the only wins coming against Jacksonville, Miami & Cleveland.
