Ruben Frank is reporting that Eagles LG Evan Mathis has undergone a minor procedure on his ankle and is likely to miss the team's remaning OTAs and summer minicamps. Frank says that Mathis is expected to be 100% for the start of training camp.
Mathis was, by far the best and most consistent presence on the Eagles offensive line last season. Not only did he have another good year, he was also the only starter on the unit not to get hurt. While now, as the Eagles introduce a brand new system, is not the optimal time to be missing reps it shouldn't really be a big deal for a veteran like Mathis.
What this may do is open the door a little crack for former 1st round pick Danny Watkins. As we wrote last week, Watkins' opportunities at a starting job seemed very limited provided everyone stay healthy. So with Mathis down until potentially training camp, Danny has a shot to spend most of this summer getting the first team reps at LG. While it may seem unlikely he could unseat Mathis, he's at least going to get a shot at increased opportunities here.
