Michael Vick has early lead over Nick Foles in QB competition

Charles LeClaire-US PRESSWIRE

There will be a lot of positions contested at the NovaCare complex in the coming months, but none will be more closely followed that the QB battle. According to Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin, Michael Vick is your early leader.

"Right now, you've got Mike going with the ones and Nick 'sprinkled in,' Maclin said Thursday.

So Vick is taking the majority of the first team snaps, which is a pretty good indication that he's the early leader for the job. This isn't really a surprise given that he's the most experienced and well paid QB on the roster, but it's worth noting that he's got the inside track so far.

What does it mean for the 2013 season? Not a lot at this point. It's going to be a long summer and I think it's going to be a relatively open competition. As Chip Kelly showed with the pick of Matt Barkley, you don't have to be a specific type of QB to play for him. The archetype of the athletic QB we thought Chip demanded... it's not real.

So while if I had to bet I'd put my money on Michael Vick being the week one starter, but I can't say I'd be surprised to see Nick Foles, Matt Barkley or even Dennis Dixon under center against the Redskins.

Well, maybe I'd be surprised to see Dennis Dixon...

Jeremy Maclin said he didn't want to speculate about who will win the starting job.

"I'm not going to get caught up in all that," Maclin said. "Obviously, you're looking at a guy like Michael Vick that's proven himself in this league a guy in Nick Foles who stepped in last year and had some success to a certain extent. Barkley - his college achievements are off the wall."

"So he has good guys to learn from. I'm pretty sure he's going to have to embrace that and go through some ups and downs being a rookie quarterback."

Maclin's sentiment has been pretty common among the Eagles playmakers this offseason. DeSean Jackson has praised both Vick & Foles and endorsed both as starters. LeSean McCoy, in an exclusive interview with BGN earlier this year, said he thinks Vick is the starter right now but just the other day said he thinks Foles or Vick could be successful in the offense.
