2013 NFL Draft live blog: Picks, trades and more

Mike: The Texans have selected my favorite WR, DeAndre Hopkins. The Vikings traded a boatload to get Cordarrelle Patterson. Both guys are special players. Patterson is a bit raw but can do it all. Hopkins is a just a very, very reliable playmaker. Both will join very good veteran number one WRs and learn. Good move for Houston. Questionable trade up for Patterson but he is super talented.

Mike: Datone Jones goes to the Packers. He will likely play 5-technique and I am huge fan of that. The Packers seem to really like kids on the West Coast. Jones is a plug and play kid and he will give guards and tackles fits. GBP just keeps getting better despite constantly picking at the end of the draft.

Dan: Bjoern Werner at 24 to the Colts and Xavier Rhodes at 25 to the Vikings. I really thought Tank Carradine would end up going before Werner, and I expected Rhodes to be the first CB off the board. As far as correctly mocking this draft, I suck. Werner had basically the same exact measurables, all around, as Paul Kurger, and it appears the Colts want him to play OLB as well. Rhodes was my #1 CB... so, obviously, I think getting him at #25, as the 4th CB off the board, is a steal. And all the WR, except for Tavon Austin, continue to plummet....

Mike: Sharrif Floyd goes to Minnesota at 23. He fell but he went to the right team. He is my top ranked player. I think he is a future Pro Bowler.

10:40

Mike: Tyler Eifert will join Jermaine Gresham to become the best tight end pair this outside of New England. The Bengals took a very good tight end over a wide receiver, proving that teams are catching up to the Patriots. Andy Dalton should be a happy lad. The Falcons traded their 30th overall pick, a 3rd rounder and a Day 3 pick to move up and grab Desmond Trufant. Trufant is a very good cornerback that has a great bloodline. With Brent Grimes and Dunta Robinson out of dodge, it made sense that the Falcons would jump for a productive cornerback. Both the Eifert and Robinson moves are smart and will pay immediate dividends.

Mike: I am a lifelong Syracuse fan and I love Justin Pugh. He is not worth a top 20 player...at all. He can play right tackle and either guard spot. He's got small arms but he can play outside. He's a good pass blocker and an okay run blocker. I think he will take Chris Snee's spot. Coming into this draft, Chip Kelly had not coached a 1st round pick. He has now coached at least two. Kyle Long joins Dion Jordan in the first round, as he was selected at 20 by "DA BEARS." Long can play immediately at guard and is poised to be an offensive tackle. He is the Stone Cold Steve Austion of offensive lineman and I think Jay Cutler is going to love him. That is now 8 offensive lineman taken before Geno Smith.

Jason: Dallas trades back! The Cowboys may actually, gasp, have extra picks when this thing is all said and done. Their partner was the 49ers, who were stocked with picks, so a move up did make sense for them. They grab LSU safety Eric Reid to replace the departed Dashon Goldson. The Steelers then take OLB Jarvis Jones. Now, we've crapped on Jones quite a bit here, but I gotta say that there's no better situation in the NFL that he could have landed in. Pittsburgh is a LB factory. They know how to train them up and Jones is in good hands.

Hahhahahahahahhahah...sorry. EJ Manuel just went 16 to the Bills. I will get back to this later. Kenny Vaccaro went 15 to the Saints. This is big for the Eagles as the Cowboys would have almost certainly snatched him up. I think he will be a very good pro player. He can play free and strong and would work in nickel. The Saints need pass defense more than the Bills need to reevaluate their draft board. On that subject, Manuel is a very raw talent. He has the tools to be a good player but you just do not see that on tape. I am happy for him though (mom's birthday and she battled breast cancer for the longest. That could have a been a bummer if the Eagles traded back in for him in the first. If you like a guy, you take him at your first chance. Bills took this kid because they believe in him. Sharrif Floyd continues to fall...

Dan: And the first two DT come off the board at picks 13 and 14 with Sheldon Richardson (who had him as the first DT taken?) to the Jets and Star Lotulelei to the Panthers. Surprising it took this long, but perhaps now we'll see the run on DT begin. I can't say I understand the Richardson pick for a Jets team whose offense is the definition of terrible, but, ok. A defensive line consisting of Muhammad Wilkerson, Quinton Coples AND Sheldon Richardson looks pretty appealing, but who's playing NT? I thought Star Lotulelei might've made more sense for them. Speaking of which, no doubt the Panthers were thrilled to see Star fall this far -- they had that pick in literally immediately.

Mike: Well...the West Coast is impacting the passing game. D.J Fluker is an intriguing pick for the Chargers and I think he can play four of the five offensive line positions. He has impressive power and can plug and play at LG or RG immediately. I am not sure this was the best value but he is a 1st-round talent. It is very interesting that the DTs are falling. Hey, Star Lotulelei, where you at? Just kidding, my top player in this draft, Sharrif Floyd, is still around too, following Houston's D.J. Hayden going to the Raiders. Dude has one of the best stories ever. Almost died in practice last year and was a medical miracle as he lived despite crazy internal bleeding. I am impressed by the Raiders. They knew they liked a reach and did not have 2nd round pick, so they added their guy and pick up a premium draft chose. Bravo, Reggie McKenzie.

The 2013 NFL draft is off to hot start as we're already 10 picks in and the first open thread is well over a thousand comments. Here's a new thread and a recap of the first round.
