According to Anthony DiMoro of Sports Rantz, the Kansas City Chiefs are negotiating with Central Michigan offensive tackle, Eric Fisher, on a contract that will make him the first pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Several other media outlets are also reporting that the Chiefs are leaning toward taking Fisher at one but are still fielding offers for their pick. Fisher has gained steam with the media and fans over the past few months following a fantastic Senior Bowl and even better NFL Combine. Texas A & M's Luke Joeckel had long been considered the top tackle in the draft, but now it seems Fisher has taken the reigns.
Fisher is a former tight end who was converted to offensive tackle. He has played both right and left tackle for the Chippewas over the past two years. He would easily be the top pick in the history of the Central Michigan, which has former alums, San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle, Joe Staley, and Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver, Antonio Brown, currently in the league. Former Eagles and current Giant, Cullen Jenkins, is also a CMU alum.
What would Fisher going first overall mean for the Eagles? Well, for one, they would not be getting Fisher who has been linked to the team on several dozens of mock drafts. It also means that Luke Joeckel may slide, as the Jaguars were rumored to have interest Fisher but not a lot has been said about his offensive tackle counterpart (he did visit with them though), who may not be a scheme fit for Jacksonville. If Joeckel falls to 4, and Lane Johnson is on the board, the Eagles may be able to trade back with the Browns at 6 and receive a pick or two and still get one of the top tackles. If the Eagles are not in search of a first round tackle, they may trade back more and gain better picks.
Whether the rumors are true or not, it seems that NFL Draft Eve is going bring plenty of excitement leading up to the time Commissioner Roger Goodell hits the podium at 8 p.m. tomorrow night.
