2013 NFL Mock Draft: Chip Kelly gets his QB

Check out our 2013 Eagles mock draft central for more opinions on who could be the #4 pick in April.

USA TODAY Sports

Everything you thought you knew about team needs heading into the 2013 NFL draft has changed. Teams like the Chiefs, Eagles, Lions and Browns were extremely active in free agency making their needs in some cases much more obvious, but in others a little more vague.

The Eagles clearly made moves to shore up their defense, but so far have ignored their problems on the offensive line. That's led some mock drafters to assume they'll have to take a lineman with their #1 pick. However, the Eagles biggest issue on the line was injuries. 4 out of 5 starters were lose last season and will be back in 2013. So if their return solidifies the line, what is the one big remaining need?

According to Chris Steuber, from Ourlads.com and PhiladelphiaEagles.com, it's franchise QB. In his mock, Geno Smith is sitting on the board at #4.

"At first, I viewed the Eagles' interest in Smith as a smokescreen," wrote Steuber. "But, after their moves in free agency, it appears they are setting themselves up for a new franchise quarterback to fit Chip Kelly's offensive philosophy. "

On the eve of free agency, the Eagles braintrust of coach Chip Kelly, GM Howie Roseman and owner Jeff Lurie all flew down to Morgantown to put Geno Smith through a private workout. I find it very unlikely that they would all go down to put Smith through his paces as a simple smokescreen to feign interest. No, it's far more likely that they were doing honest due diligence.

And if Smith's pro day performance is any indication of how he performed for the Eagles, they likely left very impressed.
