Ian Rappaport is reporting that the Eagles are among 4 teams interested in Dolphins free agent CB Sean Smith. The 49ers, Buccaneers and Chiefs are also in the mix while other reports suggest the Cardinals have interest as well.
Smith has great size at 6-3, 218 and at just 25 years old probably represents the highest upside of any corner in this very deep market. The question will be what that upside is worth? Smith is looking for top money, which could mean a deal in the range of the 5-year, $50 million dollar deal Brandon Carr got from the Cowboys.
Carr was more highly rated as a free agent than Smith, but it's those elite physical tools that are going to interest teams in Smith. Everyone in the NFL wants that Brandon Browner, Richard Sherman type mold now and at his size Sean Smith fits that.
But at least so far, he's not really on the level of those guys as far as performance. PFF had him rated as their #76 CB last season. He's young and can get better... but $20 mil guaranteed would be a lot to play for potential. He will be one of the very interesting cases to watch when free agency starts. Will some team fall head over heels with his size and offer him a Carr-like deal?
