The Philadelphia Eagles have taken virtually their entire braintrust to Morgantown, West Virginia today to hold a private workout with Mountaineers QB Geno Smith. Pro Football Talk is reporting and Adam Caplan has confirmed that Chip Kelly, Howie Roseman and even owner Jeff Lurie were all present.
It may be no more than due diligence, but it's some serious due diligence if that is the case. There are a lot new things going with the Eagles these days, but I'm not sure I ever remember hearing about Jeff Lurie going on a scouting trip. You have to think that Geno Smith at least has the chance to impress the Eagles enough to garner serious consideration with that #4 overall pick.
The Eagles currently have 5 QBs on their roster with Michael Vick, Nick Foles, Dennis Dixon, Trent Edwards & GJ Kinne. The latter 3 are entirely expendable so probably no hindrance to bringing in a rookie. Vick is only here on a one year deal, so could certainly be seen as a placeholder that would allow a rookie to sit for most of his first season.
As for Foles, if the Eagles did in fact draft Geno Smith you'd have to think a trade of him would not be far behind.
Interestingly, another QB prospect, Matt Scott from Arizona will be in Philly today to meet with coaches.
