Alex Smith traded to Kansas City Chiefs

Typically, when Andy Reid makes a trade involving a QB, he's the guy doing the fleecing. He got a 2nd round pick for AJ Feeley, who did nothing in Miami. He got a 2nd and 4th round pick for Donovan McNabb, who did nothing in Washington. Finally, he got a 2nd round pick and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie for Kevin Kolb and well... You know the drill.

But now, the tables may be turned. According to multiple reports, the San Francisco 49ers have traded QB Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs for the #34 overall pick this year and a another pick in 2014 that could be as high as another 2nd rounder. [Update 12:37 PM EST] Latest reports suggest that the 2nd pick in the deal will be a conditional pick in 2014 that could be anywhere from a mid rounder to another 2nd round pick.

It could very well be that Andy Reid finally got himself fleeced on a QB deal.

So what does this mean going forward? A lot actually. For one, any faint suggestion that the Eagles might trade Nick Foles is probably gone now. Reid and the Chiefs were likely to be the most interested if the Eagles wanted to deal and now they're out of the market.

This also almost certainly rules out the Chiefs taking a QB with the #1 overall pick, which means they'll likely have their sights set on one of the top OTs or defensive lineman. The real telling sign will be when they make a decision on whether to re-sign Branden Albert. If he leaves in free agency, Luke Joeckel might as well start looking for a place in Kansas City right away.
