The Philadelphia Eagles officially announced starting center Jason Kelce has been named the team's Ed Block courage award recipient. This yearly award "honors those National Football League players who exemplify commitment to the principles of sportsmanship and courage." This award is voted on by the team. Previous recent recipients of the award include Mike Patterson, Jason Avant, Colt Anderson, and Michael Vick.
Kelce, now in his third year after being a sixth round draft pick in 2011, is deserving of the reward. By all accounts he is a likeable player for teammates, coaches, and fans alike. Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland raved about Kelce in an interview this summer.
Stoutland praised Jason Kelce for attending rookies and selected vets days even though he wasn't required to. "Kelce is here early because he loves football. He's like that kind in high school who never leaves the gym. He's a gym rat." He later praised Kelce for being a great communicator. It's clear Stoutland holds his starting Center in high regard.
Kelce was robbed for most of his 2012 campaign after suffering an ACL and MCL tear on September 16, 2012 during the Eagles-Ravens game. He's worked hard on his recovery and has been able to return this year without any problems. Kelce looks like a natural fit in Chip Kelly's offense. His athleticism gives him in advantage to move and block in space. He's a stable force on the offensive line. Pro Football Focus ranks Kelce as their 10th overall center.
It's nice to see The Bearded One healthy and playing well again.
