Philadelphia's 24-16 win over the Washington Redskins was crucial for Eagles' playoff chances and their season moving forward. But it was also a fun game, despite Washington's late attempt at a comeback.
There were a number of crucial, big plays which contributed to Philly's victory. The Brent Celek screen that set up a short LeSean McCoy touchdown, Donnie Jones' 70 yard punt late in the game, and Brandon Boykin(g)'s game sealing interception are just a few examples.
While Boykin's play was the most meaningful in the end because it ensured Philadelphia the victory, it wasn't the play I'm picking for this weeks "Precision Play of the Week". Instead, that award goes to Connor Barwin for his sack/fumble on Robert Griffin III midway through the second quarter.
The Redskins had the ball in the red zone at the 5 yard line with 8:03 left in the quarter. It was second down. RG3 hikes the ball, looks left, looks to throw... and BOOM. Connor Barwin comes free off the edge with only running back Roy Helu Jr. in the way. Barwin easily gets by Helu's block and absolutely crushes RG3 before he has the chance to throw. The ball popped into the air and into the hands of one beastly defensive lineman named Fletcher Cox.
It was a big play that illustrated the Eagles defensive ideal "bend but don't break" model. If Washington scores there, it's either 14-7 or 14-3. That's either a one possession or two possession game still. Instead, the Eagles force the turnover and then drive down the field to kick a field goal to make it 17-0. Three possession game.
As you can see, it didn't leave RG3 feeling so hot.
Barwin's precise play was a crucial factor in the Eagles' first home win in over a year. If the Eagles defense can continue to play like this down the stretch, it's not hard to imagine the Eagles making the playoffs.
