On Tuesday, the Eagles added a special teams standout and an offensive gadget with veteran experience. Brad Smith is a man of many hats and has played a lot of football during his seven-year career. From a wildcat/backup quarterback to a touchdown-scoring kick returner to a solid receiving option, Smith has been there and done that in the NFL.
Smith was taken in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL Draft out of the University of Missouri. A college quarterback, Smith was the second passer in Division 1-A history to pass for more than 2,000 yards while secure another 1,000 on the ground. He was a four-year starter at Missouri and set several school and Division 1-A records during the process.
A 4.46 forty-time runner, Smith was selected by the Jets. He was used in several roles, but excelled as a kick returner. He ran back three kicks for touchdowns during his five-year tenure with New York.
In 2011, Smith signed a four-year deal with the Bills. Mostly used as a backup runner, receiver and returner by then-head coach Chan Gailey, Smith scored six touchdowns between 2011 and 2012. He suffered a rib injury during training camp and was placed on injured reserve by the new regime in Buffalo. Smith has caught 101 passes for 949 receiving yards and five touchdowns as well as 132 carries for 970 rushing yards and four touchdowns during his seven-year career.
Smith is likely to return kicks in place of Damaris Johnson moving forward.
